New Delhi, July 26 (NationPress) The Maharatna public sector enterprise Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has achieved an impressive growth of 273 percent in its Profit before Exceptional Items and Tax for the first quarter of the ongoing financial year.

The company has seen robust increases in sales volumes, operational revenue, and both saleable and crude steel production when compared to the same period last year (CPLY).

“SAIL’s performance in Q1 FY26 reflects enhanced operational efficiency, improved cash flow, and significant growth in domestic sales, aided by government-imposed safeguard duties,” stated Amarendu Prakash, Chairman and Managing Director of SAIL.

Despite the variability in global market conditions, rising domestic demand, increased steel production capacity, and government support through safeguard duties, “we continue our commitment to delivering high-quality steel across all sectors. Our focus on cost optimization and dedication to increasing stakeholder value remain central to our mission,” he added.

Earlier this week, SAIL announced its position as the largest steel supplier for the esteemed Zojila Tunnel project, which is currently under construction and aims to be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia's longest bi-directional tunnel.

SAIL has played a vital role in this strategic infrastructure project, supplying over 31,000 tonnes of steel—including TMT re-bars, structural steel, and plates. The company is committed to maintaining its steel supply as the project moves towards its 2027 completion deadline, as per SAIL’s statement.

“Our involvement in the Zojila Tunnel underscores SAIL's enduring legacy of contributing to nation-building. Major projects like this consistently rely on the reliability and strength of SAIL’s steel, which demonstrates our commitment to quality and our essential role in shaping the future of India,” the statement noted.

This project not only serves as a critical infrastructure asset but also represents a substantial economic opportunity for the region. SAIL’s participation in the Zojila Tunnel enhances its broader legacy in supporting India’s most significant infrastructure initiatives, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges, the statement concluded.
