Tokyo, Aug 30 (NationPress) The semiconductor sector plays a vital role in the collaboration between India and Japan, stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

Referring to the semiconductor domain as a strategic area, PM Modi, currently on an official trip to Japan, noted that India has made remarkable advancements in this field.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi arrived in Sendai, located in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture, where he traveled aboard the famed Shinkansen (bullet train) alongside Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba.

In Sendai, both leaders toured Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi), a premier Japanese firm in the semiconductor industry.

"I visited Prime Minister Ishiba and Tokyo Electron's factory. I observed the training room and the Production Innovation Lab, and exchanged insights with the company's executives," PM Modi shared in a post on the social media platform X.

"The semiconductor field is crucial for India-Japan cooperation. Recently, India has witnessed significant growth in this area, engaging many young talents. I aspire to maintain this momentum moving forward," he added.

As per a statement from the PMO, PM Modi expressed gratitude to PM Ishiba for accompanying him on this visit and reaffirmed India's commitment to closely collaborate with Japan in this strategic sector.

"The Prime Minister received insights about TEL’s role within the global semiconductor value chain, its advanced manufacturing competencies, and its current and future partnerships with India. The factory visit provided both leaders with a practical perspective on the collaborative opportunities that exist between the two nations in semiconductor supply chain management, fabrication, and testing," the PMO noted.

This visit to Sendai also emphasized the synergy between India's expanding semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and Japan's expertise in advanced semiconductor technology and equipment.

"Both parties reiterated their dedication to enhancing cooperation in this sector, building on the Memorandum of Cooperation regarding the Japan-India Semiconductor Supply Chain Partnership, along with existing collaborations under the India-Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership and Economic Security Dialogue," the PMO mentioned.

The joint engagement further illustrated the shared vision of India and Japan to cultivate resilient, robust, and trusted semiconductor supply chains.

PM Modi also engaged with the governors of 16 Japanese prefectures in Tokyo, highlighting the transformative potential of inter-regional partnerships in diverse areas, including trade, innovation, startups, and emerging technologies.

During his two-day visit to Japan from August 29-30, at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister HE Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi is marking his eighth visit to the country, having last been there in May 2023.
