SK hynix Establishes New Divisions for AI Chip Innovation and Production

Seoul, Dec 5 (NationPress) SK hynix revealed on Thursday the establishment of two new divisions dedicated to the development and mass production of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) chips. This initiative is part of the company’s annual restructuring strategy aimed at strengthening its position in the swiftly evolving AI memory industry.
The newly appointed chief development officer (CDO) and chief production officer (CPO) will manage these divisions, working alongside three existing executives responsible for marketing, technology, and corporate center operations, according to the company.
Vice President Ahn Hyun has been elevated to president to lead the newly formed development division, which is focused on creating future products, including next-generation AI high bandwidth memory (HBM), as reported by Yonhap news agency.
As CDO, Ahn will also drive SK hynix's initiative to enhance the technological competitiveness of both DRAM and NAND, as stated by the company.
The new mass production division will manage both the front-end and back-end processes of chip manufacturing, with the goal of optimizing synergies and advancing production technologies for its fabs domestically and internationally, including the upcoming Yongin Semiconductor Cluster.
"The collective efforts of our employees have fortified our technological edge in the AI memory sector, particularly in HBM and enterprise solid state drives (SSDs), this year," stated CEO Kwak Noh-jung. "As we navigate a rapidly changing business landscape, we will recalibrate our operations and future growth foundations to further entrench our leadership in AI memory."
SK hynix holds a leading position in the HBM market, boasting a 54 percent global market share last year, with Samsung Electronics following at 41 percent and U.S. Micron Technology at 5 percent.
Additionally, SK Telecom announced an organizational restructuring as part of its efforts to enhance its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and telecommunications.
The company will now operate a total of seven business divisions, with three focused on its main telecommunications operations and the remaining four dedicated to the AI sector, according to its representatives.
The four AI-centric divisions include the A. (pronounced "A dot") division, the global personal AI agent division, the AI transformation division, and the AI data center division. A. refers to SK Telecom's domestic AI assistant service.
