In the meantime, a boardroom conflict appears to be brewing within the company following the unexpected passing of Sunjay Kapur, the chairman and non-executive director, at the age of 53. He passed away from a heart attack while playing polo in England.

With his tragic death, no members of the Kapur family remain on the Board, which was established in 1995 as Sona Okegawa Precision Forgings Ltd in collaboration with Mitsubishi Metal Corporation Limited. The first manufacturing plant was launched in Chennai in 1999, and the company rebranded to Sona BLW Precision Forgings Limited in 2013.

Rani Kapur, the former chairperson and wife of the late Dr. Surinder Kapur, the founder of Sona Comstar and the Sona Group, holds a majority stake in the Sona Group, including the company.

The Sona Group's total revenue for FY24 was approximately Rs 3,184.8 crore, equivalent to around $383.7 million.

As for its market valuation, Sona Comstar's market capitalization stands at approximately Rs 2.94 lakh crore, which may vary with market trends, translating to about $3.54 billion.

Sona BLW Precision Forgings Limited (Sona Comstar) was set to hold its 29th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday. It remains uncertain whether Rani Kapur will reclaim her position as chairperson following her son's death or if the AGM will appoint another member of the Kapur family.

Point of View

It is essential to remain objective in assessing the current situation at Sona Comstar. The decline in share prices could indeed be attributed to internal conflicts following the recent boardroom changes.
