Stock Market Closes Steady, Adani Ports Leads Gains
Mumbai, Dec 26 (NationPress) The domestic benchmark indices concluded the trading session flat on Thursday, with noticeable selling pressure in IT, FMCG, metal, media, and private bank sectors on Nifty. Adani Ports emerged as the top gainer, with its shares climbing over 5 percent to Rs 1,243.90 at the close. Adani Green Energy also saw a rise, closing Rs 33.20 higher at Rs 1,064.30 per share.
The Sensex finished at 78,472.48, slightly down by 0.39 points, while the Nifty closed at 23,750.20, gaining 22.55 points or 0.10 percent.
The Nifty Bank index concluded at 51,170.70, down by 62.30 points or 0.12 percent. The Nifty Midcap 100 index ended at 57,125.70, increasing 67.80 points or 0.12 percent, whereas the Nifty Smallcap 100 index dropped to 18,728.65, declining by 4 points or 0.02 percent.
On the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), 1,639 shares finished in the green, while 2,329 shares closed in the red, and 106 shares saw no change.
Experts noted that on this final expiry day of the year, the domestic market remained subdued throughout the day due to holidays in other markets and a lack of significant domestic or global catalysts. Auto shares experienced gains following recent corrections.
Sector-wise, buying activity was observed in the Auto, PSU Bank, Financial services, Pharma, Realty, Energy, Infra, and Commodities sectors on Nifty.
Within the Sensex list, top gainers included Adani Ports, M&M, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Ultra Tech Cement, Power Grid, HCL Tech, SBI, and Tata Steel. In contrast, Titan, Asian Paints, Zomato, Tech Mahindra, Nestle India, and Reliance were the biggest losers.
One expert remarked, "Ongoing worries regarding FII outflows and a depreciating rupee persist, especially with the strengthening US dollar index, concerns about potential adverse tariffs, and apprehensions about rate cuts in 2025, contributing to the muted market trend."
On December 24, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) divested equities worth Rs 2,454.21 crore, while domestic institutional investors purchased equities totaling Rs 2,819.25 crore on the same day.
