New Delhi, June 14 (NationPress) The Indian Medical Association's Gujarat State Branch has called upon Tata Sons to provide financial assistance for the medical students of BJ Medical College who were either injured or lost their lives in the tragic Air India flight AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad airport.

Many students from the college were at the crash site during this devastating event which has left the nation in mourning, resulting in approximately 274 fatalities, including both passengers and individuals on the ground.

Following the incident, the Tata Group, which operates Air India, pledged a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of those who perished in the unfortunate accident.

In a letter to N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, the IMA expressed appreciation for Air India's compensation announcement and requested prompt and generous support for the affected students and medical professionals.

"We respectfully urge you to consider providing financial aid and essential support for the medical students present at the crash site who were either injured or tragically lost their lives in this incident," the letter stated.

“These individuals were not merely victims; they represented the future of our healthcare system. Their families and their well-being deserve equivalent support and care. We sincerely implore you to announce similar assistance for the medical students affected by this tragedy,” it continued.

Previously, two doctors submitted a petition to the Supreme Court, requesting that the Central Government take action to provide appropriate compensation to the affected medical students.

The petition, initiated on Friday by Dr. Saurav Kumar and Dr. Dhruv Chauhan, urges the Supreme Court to mandate that the Central Government promptly announce and distribute interim compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the families of all deceased victims, including resident doctors from BJ Medical College who were among those lost.

Additionally, the petition called for the Central Government to offer rehabilitation support, including job opportunities for eligible family members of the deceased, and to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash's causes, alongside implementing measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
