Will the Removal of US Tariffs Enhance Indian Exports and Employment?

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) In response to the recent US Supreme Court ruling that annulled the tariffs imposed by the previous administration, Indian industry leaders expressed optimism on Saturday. They believe this decision will greatly enhance exports, fortify trade relationships, and rejuvenate job opportunities across various sectors.
Nainesh Pachchigar, President of the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) in Gujarat, shared his thoughts with IANS, stating that the industry is pleased with the Supreme Court's ruling that deemed the tariffs, set by former US President Donald Trump, as illegal.
Despite Trump’s earlier initiative to reduce the import duty on diamonds to zero percent due to a trade agreement with India, the diamond jewelry sector still faced elevated tariffs of approximately 18 percent.
“The court’s decision to eliminate tariffs on several nations is a significant milestone for India’s gem and jewelry industry,” he remarked to IANS.
“Should these tariffs be entirely lifted and maintained for an extended period, we can expect a surge in Indian exports, which would provide a substantial boost to the industry,” Pachchigar asserted.
He emphasized that increased exports would also facilitate job creation, particularly for small artisans and craftsmen who rely heavily on this sector for their livelihood.
Pachchigar mentioned that while the court has issued its ruling, it remains to be seen how the US administration will react and if they will introduce new legal measures or statements.
Rajesh Gandhi, Senior Vice President of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, echoed this sentiment, labeling the development as beneficial.
He noted that if tariffs on Indian goods are lowered to 10 percent, it could unlock growth potential for various industries.
“Reduced tariffs will enhance the competitiveness of Indian products in the US market, propelling sectors like textiles, trading, and manufacturing,” Gandhi told IANS.
Business leaders from the textile and trading industries expressed similar views, indicating that uniform tariffs of 10 percent across nations would establish a fair competitive environment.
They anticipate that such a change would improve trade dynamics, amplify competitiveness, and bolster India’s standing within the US market.
