Washington, Aug 4 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a warning that he might significantly increase tariffs on India due to its oil purchases from Russia.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump did not specify the nature of the tariffs he proposed.
"India is not only acquiring huge quantities of Russian Oil, but they are also selling much of it on the Open Market for substantial profits. They seem indifferent to the number of lives being lost in Ukraine due to the Russian War Machine," Trump stated in his social media update.
"As a result, I will be implementing a significant tariff increase for India on goods imported to the USA," he added.
Previously, Stephen Miller, one of Trump's key advisors, indicated that the US President firmly believes that India must cease its purchases of Russian oil.
"What he (Trump) emphasized is that it is unacceptable for India to finance this war through oil purchases from Russia," Miller remarked during an interview on Sunday Morning Futures.
However, he acknowledged that Trump's rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "exceptional".
Just last week, the US President hinted at a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from India, along with penalties for acquiring Russian oil.
Meanwhile, government officials have clarified that there is no interruption in oil imports from Russia. According to sources, "India's energy purchases are dictated by national interests and market dynamics. We have not received any information indicating that Indian oil companies are halting their Russian imports".
