Will Indian Travellers Soon Make UPI Payments in Malaysia?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Oct 30 (NationPress) In a significant advancement aimed at globalizing India's digital payment revolution, Razorpay announced on Thursday that Indian travellers will soon have the capability to conduct UPI payments while in Malaysia.
This initiative is being made possible through Razorpay's Malaysian subsidiary, Curlec, in collaboration with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the global branch of the National Payments Corporation of India.
The partnership, which was formalized during the Global Fintech Fest 2025, represents a significant step forward in broadening the acceptance of UPI beyond Indian territory.
With this new integration, millions of Indian tourists visiting Malaysia will have the ability to make quick, secure payments to local businesses using their favored UPI applications, eliminating the need for international credit cards or the hassles of currency exchange.
In 2024, over one million Indian tourists flocked to Malaysia, spending more than Rs 110 billion, marking an impressive 71.7 percent increase from the previous year.
The rising number of travellers between India and Malaysia underscores the demand for more streamlined, cashless, and cost-effective payment solutions.
The rollout of UPI in Malaysia is anticipated to facilitate smoother transactions, decrease foreign exchange costs, and provide advantages for both tourists and local vendors.
UPI, which is India's flagship real-time payment system, has fundamentally transformed the transaction landscape for Indians.
In just September 2025, nearly 20 billion payments were processed through UPI, showcasing its capability for instant and secure money transfers at a remarkable scale.
By integrating into this robust framework, Malaysian enterprises can engage with a large base of Indian tourists who rely on and trust UPI for their everyday transactions.
Under this new framework, Malaysian merchants will be able to accept payments directly through Razorpay Curlec's platform, with settlements conducted in the local currency, the ringgit (RM).
This means Indian users can make instantaneous payments via their UPI-enabled apps, replicating their experience in India.
Shashank Kumar, Managing Director and Co-founder of Razorpay, commented on this development, stating, “UPI has fundamentally transformed the way India handles payments, demonstrating the possibilities when innovation and inclusion merge at scale.”
“Now, with Curlec, we aim to bring that same dynamism to Malaysia, enabling both businesses and travellers to experience the speed, trust, and simplicity that characterize India’s digital payments. This is not merely about transactions; it’s about fostering a genuinely borderless fintech future across Asia,” he added.
