New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) The trials for the Decarbonising Rice project, which received the breakthrough scientific contribution award at the recent annual gathering of the World Economic Forum in Davos, have now been broadened to include India, Laos, and Indonesia.

Led by the Singaporean non-profit Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory, the Decarbonising Rice initiative utilizes a three-pronged integrative strategy designed to transform the sustainability of rice — one of the planet’s most vital crops.

This initiative employs innovative scientific techniques while promoting cooperation among rice producers, governmental bodies, and the private sector.

During the initial phase of trials conducted in Singapore and India, the project successfully reduced methane emissions by 20% to 50% and cut water usage by approximately 50%. Additionally, it achieved a yield increase of 5% to 10%. The production efforts have now scaled up to encompass 100-hectare trials in India, Laos, and Indonesia.

The breakthrough scientific contribution award is one of five cross-sector collaborations recognized during the Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) awards at the WEF in 2025. The innovative partnerships celebrated last night in Davos showcase the necessary scale, speed, and creativity required to make substantial, sustainable advancements in tackling global environmental challenges.

The GAEA Awards celebrate collaborations that are promoting essential climate and nature objectives across five critical domains: climate, nature, and resilience science; innovation ecosystem; business action; philanthropic-public-private partnership; and intergenerational leadership.

The five awarded initiatives will receive customized support throughout 2025 to enhance and expand their impact and promote comprehensive systemic change.

“The GAEA Awards honor organizations and partnerships that are driving transformative change for climate and nature,” stated Gim Huay Neo, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum.

“By highlighting successful innovations and partnerships across various industry participants, along with collaborations between government, business, and civil society, we aim to encourage more entities to engage and work collectively towards a sustainable future for everyone,” Neo further commented.

The WEF Annual Meeting 2025 occurred in Davos-Klosters from January 20 to 24, gathering global leaders under the theme, Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.
