Aabhaas Mehta joins 'Hastinapur Ke Veer' as King Jarasandha on Sony SAB
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
TV actor Aabhaas Mehta, best known for his role in 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?', has been cast as King Jarasandha in the mythological drama 'Hastinapur Ke Veer', airing on Sony SAB. The show, which premiered on 2 June 2026, chronicles the formative years of the Pandavas and Kauravas ahead of the great Mahabharata war.
How the Role Came About
Mehta revealed that it was the show itself, rather than the character, that first drew his interest. 'I would be a liar if I say that I was drawn to the character because honestly I had zero idea about the story, about this character,' he said. The actor added that the Mahabharata connection was a decisive factor, noting that he had never previously been part of any production tied to the epic.
'It's mythology and it's Mahabharat and I have never been a part of anything to do with Mahabharat. So I thought this is a good chance to join another epic tale,' Mehta said.
A Career Built on Mythology
Mehta's entry into 'Hastinapur Ke Veer' extends a long association with mythological television. He made his genre debut with 'Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev', followed by 'Sinhasan Battisi' — where he played the character of Betal — and later 'Mahakali – Anth hi Aarambh Hai', which he described as his best experience in the genre to date. Most recently, he appeared in 'Lakshmi Narayan – Sukh Samarthya Santulan', a retelling centred on Lord Vishnu. His credits outside mythology include 'Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh Piyaji' and 'Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum'.
'Mahakali was the best experience in a mythological show I have ever had. I played a super villain in that and it was very difficult to do that character because of the entire scenario with all the get up,' he recalled.
The Weight of Mythological Roles
Mehta spoke candidly about the dual freedom and responsibility that come with playing figures from Indian mythology. He noted that the genre allows performers a 'larger than life' scope precisely because these stories exist in established literature, audio, visual, and popular culture — which means audience expectations are already firmly set.
'You got to be very honest with your writing in this so that you don't sway from the game. And you have to make sure you don't hurt anybody's sentiments,' he said.
Preparation and What to Expect
For the role of Jarasandha, Mehta said he conducted extensive research into the king's mythology and backstory. He declined to reveal the specific interpretation he is bringing to the character, calling it 'a pleasant surprise' for viewers. The actor signed off with a direct appeal to his audience: 'I sincerely hope that I do absolute justice to this character — I am working hard for it so please do watch and show your love.'
'Hastinapur Ke Veer' continues to air on Sony SAB, with Mehta's arc as Jarasandha expected to add a significant antagonist dimension to the ongoing narrative.
