Singer Abhijeet Sawant, best known as the winner of Indian Idol Season 1, has described playback singing for film heroes as 'an exciting part' of his craft, as he prepares for the release of his contribution to the upcoming Marathi film Swapna Sundari. The Mumbai-based artist spoke about how lending his voice to a character adds a new dimension to his musical journey.

From Reality Show to Film Playback

'My musical journey began with a reality show, and today, this endless journey of music is continuing with diverse projects which makes me extremely happy,' Sawant said in a statement. His path from winning Indian Idol in its debut season to recording title tracks for regional cinema reflects the range he has built over two decades in the industry.

He added that the process of recording for a film carries a unique creative responsibility. 'Sometimes, you even get to act through a song, and it feels like a bonus point. But the process of a film song is very exciting because I feel it's the voice you lend to the film's hero. For me, the experience of doing a cover song for a film is something that teaches me something new every time,' he said.

What Swapna Sundari Means to Him

Sawant noted that playback singing demands an awareness of the character being portrayed, not just the melody. 'You have to keep in mind that you're also representing the film's characters while singing. I also lean towards creating something different that resonates with today's youth and matches their trend, and this makes it possible,' he said. He expressed hope that the song Swapna Sundari would receive the same audience warmth as his earlier work.

A Career Spanning Albums, Films and Television

After his Indian Idol Season 1 victory, Sawant released his debut solo album Aapka Abhijeet Sawant in 2005, the same year he made his playback debut in the Bollywood film Aashiq Banaya Aapne with the track Mar Jaawan Mit Jaawan. His second studio album, Junoon, followed in 2007, and his third, Farida, arrived in 2013.

Beyond music, Sawant made his acting debut in the film Lottery in 2009 and made a brief appearance in Tees Maar Khan. He also appeared as himself in the romantic drama series Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai and the thriller crime series C.I.D.
