Adil Hussain on acting: 'It must liberate me from myself'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor Adil Hussain, currently appearing in the newly released film 'Max, Min and Meowzaki', has opened up about his deeply personal approach to inhabiting characters — one rooted in the idea that true acting demands a shedding of the self.
Acting as Liberation
Speaking during the promotional circuit for the film in Mumbai, Hussain described his craft as something far more interior than performance. 'The kind of acting that I believe in, not necessarily it might be the same with other actors, but the kind of acting that I believe in, it must liberate me from myself, from my personal conditioning which I have been carrying from generations,' he said.
He elaborated that this liberation is what allows him to portray morally complex or even small-hearted characters with authenticity. 'To be able to walk towards a large-hearted person to play a small-hearted person — because a small-hearted person would not be able to embrace a large-hearted person. You see, the opposite is possible,' Hussain explained.
A Lifelong Personal Reckoning
The actor acknowledged that this journey of self-dismantling is ongoing, not a completed project. 'I had been extremely strict with my own idea of what should be the basic principles to live our lives. And so it took me — not took me, it's still taking me — a huge amount of personal work,' he said. He credited his profession, which he prefers to call 'self-expression through art,' as the vehicle for this transformation.
Rejecting Guilt and Regret
Hussain also shared a philosophy he has carried from his training days: a deliberate refusal to entertain guilt or regret. He recalled a formative moment with a teacher during a rehearsal: 'I was doing something and suddenly I stopped because he said, 'It's not happening'. I was like, 'Oh God, I am so sorry'. He said, 'Adil, don't say sorry. You detect that you made a mistake. Don't look back and be there in guilt. Just look forward, and correct it'.'
That lesson has stayed with him. 'I do not entertain guilt. I do not entertain regret because I do not want to go backward... I don't think regret and guilt has any place in my life,' Hussain said.
