Aditi Rao Hydari on 'Parivarik ManuRanjan': Acting with a writer changes everything
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Aditi Rao Hydari has opened up about the distinctive creative experience of working on her upcoming film 'Parivarik ManuRanjan', specifically highlighting what it means to perform alongside a writer who is also a seasoned actor. The film, set to premiere on SonyLIV on 13 November 2026, has generated curiosity for its unusual writing-room dynamic.
When the Writer Understands the Actor
The film's screenplay is co-written by actor-writer Brijendra Kala, alongside Varun V. Sharma and Ali Abbas Zafar. Speaking during promotional events at a property in Goregaon East, Mumbai, Hydari reflected on how that combination unlocked a different kind of freedom on set.
'So, I think, those spaces are there in their writing, to fumble, to make a mistake, to have a second thought. And it's in the writing itself. I can say this, maybe I felt it more because I had a lot of amazing co-actors on set who were playing with the writing like that. So, when you see them playing, you're like, I can also play it to the gallery,' she said.
Pankaj Tripathi's On-Set Spontaneity
Hydari was particularly effusive about working alongside co-star Pankaj Tripathi, describing how his moment-to-moment unpredictability pushed her own performances into new territory.
'And then, because every time they're doing a scene, like Pankaj sir, he would do something different, he would also look somewhere else, think about something else, and I have to respond to that. His thought, I could see it in his eyes, his thought changes instantly because that line can lead to multiple thoughts. Pankaj sir encouraged me to do that a lot. It's always like playing off each other,' she said.
This kind of spontaneous, reactive performance style — where actors treat scripted lines as launchpads rather than fixed texts — is a hallmark of naturalistic Indian cinema, and Tripathi has long been regarded as one of its foremost practitioners.
Hydari on the Philosophy of Film Promotions
Separately, Hydari weighed in on the broader debate around film marketing in the streaming era. Drawing an analogy with cooking, she argued that heavy promotional garnishing cannot rescue a poorly conceived story. Her view: makers should anchor their energy in storytelling first, treating marketing as a tool to amplify strong content rather than compensate for weak material.
This comes amid an industry-wide conversation about whether elaborate promotional campaigns for OTT releases deliver genuine audience conversion or merely spike day-one curiosity before word-of-mouth takes over.
