Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was visibly moved during a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) after contestant Kapila Taneja, a domestic violence survivor from Chhattisgarh, revealed she has been separated from her daughter for more than 24 years. The conversation took a poignant turn when Bachchan asked Kapila about her daughter. Kapila disclosed that she last saw her daughter at a hospital and has neither heard her voice nor met her since — a separation spanning over two decades. In her own words: 'Itni jaankari meko nahi hain. Kyunki hospital se hi jo maine aakhri baar unhe dekha tha, uske baad se na maine uski aawaz suni hain, na main usse mil payi hoon. 24 saal se zyada ho gaye hain.' Kapila further described her persistent efforts to reconnect, including appeals before a judge, requests to her husband, and pleas to her in-laws for even a phone number. She said: 'Ek din aisa nahi gaya jismein maine uske liye prayer na ki ho... aur aaj mai chahti hu ki aap usko bas do shabd blessings ke de dijiye.' (Not a single day has gone by when I haven't prayed for her... and today, I simply want you to give her a few words of blessings.)

Bachchan's Message on the Sanctity of Motherhood

Moved by Kapila's account, Bachchan expressed hope that the programme could help her re-establish contact with her daughter. He then offered a heartfelt reflection on the word 'maa': 'Dekhiye ek bachche ke sabse aavashyak aur bahut hi labhdayak aur bahut hi ruchi wala ek shabd hota hai aur woh hain maa. Jab aap maa bolenge tab aapko pata chalega. Ek mata ka darja jo hai samaj mein kitna hota hai.' (You see, there is one word that is most essential, immensely valuable and deeply meaningful in a child's life, and that word is 'maa' — mother. When you say 'maa', you will understand the place a mother holds in society.)

He also reassured Kapila, urging her not to remain alone, and voiced hope that the platform of KBC could serve as a bridge between mother and daughter.
