Amrita Bagchi on playing Alka Ahuja in 'Operation Safed Sagar'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Amrita Bagchi has spoken candidly about what compelled her to take on the role of Alka Ahuja in the web series 'Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War', calling the character's resilience and quiet optimism the defining factors in her decision.
What Drew Her to the Role
In an interview, Bagchi said she was immediately drawn to the story and, more specifically, to the woman at the centre of it. “I was drawn to the story and, more importantly, to the character of Alka Ahuja. The seed of a courageous woman was always there in her, but what surprised me most was her optimism and lightness. Even after going through so much, she did not become bitter or lose faith. She continued to go through life with a lot of lightness. I really liked that aspect of her personality, and it is something I would like to incorporate into my own life as well,” she said.
Depth Over Screen Time
Bagchi was also asked whether the emotional arc of a character matters more than the size of the role. Her answer was unequivocal. “Absolutely. But what matters to me is the role of the character within the story. If you remove the character from the story, will the story remain the same? If the story changes with the arrival of that character, then I want to play that character. Whether it is a four-scene character or a twenty-scene character, the plot should be connected to the character. I don’t want to act as a decorative element,” she said.
About the Character and Series
Bagchi portrays Alka Ahuja, the wife of Ajay Ahuja, in the series. 'Operation Safed Sagar' is directed by Oni Sen and is based on the codename given to the Indian Air Force's (IAF) operations during the Kargil War. The narrative centres particularly on the IAF's No. 17 Squadron and its contributions to the conflict — a chapter that has received relatively limited mainstream dramatisation until now.
Cast and Premiere
The series features an ensemble cast including Jimmy Shergill, Siddharth, Vinay Pathak, Manu Rishi Chadha, and Abhay Verma, alongside Bagchi. 'Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War' premiered on 7 August 2026. With the Kargil War continuing to resonate as a defining chapter in modern Indian military history, the series arrives as part of a broader wave of content revisiting that conflict from previously unexplored vantage points.
