Veteran actor Anupam Kher on 25 May 2025 marked 42 years since the release of his debut film Saaransh, sharing a heartfelt video on social media reflecting on a career that now spans 551 films. The actor, who first appeared on screen on 25 May 1984 at Metro Cinema, Mumbai, used the milestone to send a message of hope to aspiring performers across India.

A Career That Began Against the Odds

Kher recalled arriving in Mumbai with just ₹37 in his pocket, and being cast — at 28 years old — to portray a 65-year-old man in Saaransh. “42 years ago, on 25th May 1984, my first film, Saransh, was released in Mumbai, in Metro Cinema. I don’t know how these 42 years have passed,” he said. “In these 42 years, I have received so much love from my film industry, from the public, from the audience, from my technicians, directors, producers, co-actors.”

The Saaransh Paradox

Kher revealed that Saaransh released on a turbulent day in Mumbai when riots broke out in the city, leading him to fear his career was over before it had begun. “I thought, my career is gone. No one will go to watch the film,” he recalled. Yet the film endured, and Kher noted with characteristic self-deprecating humour that even after decades of acclaimed work, audiences still measure every performance against that debut. “It cannot be like Saaransh because at that time, I was nothing and I had put all my efforts to play this role,” he said.

Gratitude to Mentors and Collaborators

Kher specifically thanked filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt and Suraj Barjatya for their role in shaping his journey. Addressing Barjatya, who was an assistant on the original film, Kher noted that the two have since collaborated on seven films together. The acknowledgement underscores the long arcs of loyalty and mentorship that have defined his career in the Hindi film industry.

Framing his journey as a template for aspiration, Kher said the story of a forest department clerk’s son making it to the top of Bollywood was proof that “anything is possible.” “This is for all those people, those kids, those aspirants who dream of becoming something in small cities,” he said.
