Bollywood actress Archana Puran Singh has opened up about the double-edged legacy of Miss Briganza, her beloved teacher character from the 1998 blockbuster 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' — acknowledging it as both the pinnacle and the paradox of her career. Speaking in a recent interview, she said she hopes audiences will now look beyond that iconic role and engage with the newer work she has been doing.

The Blessing and the Burden of an Iconic Role

Archana reflected candidly on what it means to be so closely identified with a single character more than two decades after the film's release. 'In a way, Miss Briganza is my victory, and in a way it can also be called my failing that I have not done another character which can overshadow Miss Briganza. It means whatever you wanted to do, you did 20–25 years ago. Now you haven't done anything,' she said.

Yet she was careful not to diminish the achievement. 'If I look at it in a positive way, then yes, it was a great character created by Dharma, and Karan Johar. And if I played it well, it has stayed in people's minds. Definitely every actor wants to reinvent themselves,' she added.

A Conscious Departure in 'Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya'

Archana says her latest OTT project, 'Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya' — which premiered on 24 July — represents a deliberate creative pivot. 'What I did in 'Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya' is so far away from Miss Briganza that I hope it also leaves a mark. Every character is not popular because of your talent alone. A film becomes popular because of everyone involved. So I have left Miss Briganza far behind. I am hoping that the public will also leave it somewhere far behind,' she said.

The show has been receiving encouraging early reviews, and Archana describes the experience as among the most fulfilling of her career. 'For me, the experience of 'Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya' is so unique that when I started acting many years ago, my journey had to come to this point, and I am happy that it has reached that point,' she said.

What the Role Means to Her

A key moment for Archana was learning that writer-director Biswapati Sarkar had specifically envisioned her for the lead role. 'When Biswapati Sarkar conceptualised a role and then thought of me as the actor to play it, I felt very happy and proud,' she said, expressing gratitude to the makers for their trust.

For an actress who has spent decades in the industry, being sought out for fresh, challenging material carries more weight than any nostalgia-driven recall. 'After doing all that, if even in this role the creators are watching me and thinking of me, for me that is my real victory,' she concluded.
