Mumbai, June 20 (NationPress) It has been 22 years since Jhankaar Beats made its mark as a refreshing cinematic experience with its distinctive music and undeniable charm.
Sujoy Ghosh marked his debut as a director with Jhankaar Beats, a film that paid homage to the musical genius R.D. Burman, showcasing a cast of characters who were all aspiring musicians.
Rongita Nandy from Pritish Nandy Communications reflected on how the film was truly ahead of its time. She mentioned, "Celebrating 22 years of Jhankaar! This also marks 25 years since we first decided to create this film! We produced something unforgettable—how many can say that?! I recall it was among the first scripts we chose to produce when we went public. Rajeev Masand, who was then with the Bombay Times, mentioned he had a friend with an extraordinary script. Our admiration for Masand led Ba and me to meet Sujoy, and we realized he was the original visionary. We had to make this happen and join the ranks of B-town’s creative party! Then, with Vishal and Shekhar joining us, our musical celebration began.
Discussing how they assembled the film's cast, Nandy added, "We faced rejections from many actors in the industry until we got a yes from Archana Puran Singh! Thus, Sujoy and I formed a unique ensemble of actors who reluctantly agreed to participate: Juhi, Sanjay, Rahul, Rinke, Riya, and Shayan. And thus, Jhankaar Beats came to life, with R.D. Burman's mouth organ resonating throughout. This film was birthed from the essence of youth and camaraderie, and every frame celebrated that—perhaps that’s why it resonated with so many viewers and continues to dwell in their hearts.
When asked about the potential for a sequel to Jhankaar Beats, she stated, "Ba, Sujoy, and I have often pondered the idea of a sequel—but we are neither as youthful nor as innocent as before—we would probably spoil it! There is, and will always be, just one Jhankaar Beats, and it requires a courageous audience to cherish and recall it—thank you to all who have watched, loved, and remembered!"
Featuring Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Rahul Bose, Rinke Khanna, Riya Sen, and debutant Shayan Munshi in pivotal roles, Jhankaar Beats premiered on June 20, 2003.
