Liverpool FC has officially confirmed the transfer of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen on June 20. The 22-year-old midfielder has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2030, having successfully completed his medical examination and agreed on personal terms last Friday. The transfer fee is reported to be a record-breaking 116 million Pounds.
Wirtz joins Arne Slot’s squad as the latest summer signing, reuniting with his former teammate Jeremie Frimpong.
Following his signing, Wirtz expressed his excitement, stating, “I feel very happy and very proud. Finally, it’s done, and I have been waiting for a long time – I am truly happy.”
“I’m really looking forward to this new adventure. One of the main reasons for my move was to experience something entirely different, stepping out of the Bundesliga to join the Premier League.
“I am eager to see how I perform there. I have spoken to several players who have played in the league, and they all told me it's a perfect fit for me, with every pitch being excellent to play on. I can’t wait to play my first match.”
Wirtz is hailed as one of the top talents in global football, arriving at Merseyside after a remarkable five-and-a-half years with Leverkusen, where he transitioned from Cologne’s youth system.
Making his Bundesliga debut at just 17 years and 15 days old in May 2020, he scored his first senior goal a few weeks later against Bayern Munich.
He made his debut for the German national team in September 2021, but a serious injury the following March sidelined him for several months.
Despite this setback, Wirtz returned to have a phenomenal season as Leverkusen won the league and cup double in the 2023-24 season and reached the Europa League final, finishing the Bundesliga campaign unbeaten.
To date, he has 31 caps and has scored seven goals for Germany, including two goals in five appearances at Euro 2024 last summer.
