Mumbai, February 28 (NationPress) Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan delved into the fascinating ways our daily language intertwines with the realms of automobiles and cricket, highlighting how numerous phrases originate from these two domains.

In a recent blog post, Bachchan shared a variety of expressions commonly used, such as when hard work encounters a challenge, it has "hit a speed bump"; or the idea of "pressing the accelerator" to gain momentum, and "putting on the brakes" at the first hint of difficulty.

He mused, "There’s still so much to grasp and comprehend... Every moment is like shifting gears, so to speak... (Why do we always rely on car and game-related similes?)... For instance, 'my work faced a speed bump,' 'I was moving along smoothly, but decided to accelerate, thus I pressed the gas,' or 'when I detect trouble, I just hit the brakes.'"

Bachchan also noted phrases like "running out of fuel" when energy wanes and the dislike for "backseat driving" when unsolicited advice is given.

"I just received a green signal for my project and took off," he remarked.

He drew comparisons with cricket terminology, mentioning how phrases such as "that was a bouncer" for something that goes over one’s head, "well left" when opting out of a situation, or labeling an accomplishment as a "sixer" have effortlessly integrated into everyday dialogue.

"‘Alright! So that was a bouncer’ (the delivery that exceeds the batsman’s head—what was said just went over my head, couldn’t grasp it) ‘well left..’ (not attempting to hit the ball, letting it pass the batsman in the crease, a clear decision to avoid engagement in what's suggested) ‘Wow, that's a sixer!’ (in cricket, when the batsman strikes the ball beyond the boundary without a bounce, scoring six runs maximum—your achievement was phenomenal) and likewise... bowled... own goal... hit wicket... run out..."

"The evolution of human vocabulary... how it develops and continues to mature daily... Alright Ef...! retired hurt...!!! time for a nap emoji.
