BAFTA Clarifies Controversial Comment Made During Ceremony
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Feb 25 (NationPress) The BAFTA Awards have released a statement addressing the controversial comment that was reported during the ceremony.
The organization clarified that the sound attributed to John Davidson stemmed from a verbal tic associated with Tourette Syndrome.
In a detailed note shared on their social media, the BAFTA committee stated, “During the BAFTA Film Awards last night, our attendees were exposed to very offensive language that evokes significant trauma and pain for many individuals. We wish to recognize the distress this has caused, discuss what transpired, and express our sincere apologies to everyone affected. One of our attendees, John Davidson MBE, has Tourette Syndrome and has dedicated his life to raising awareness and advocating for better understanding of this condition. Tourette Syndrome results in involuntary verbal tics that individuals cannot control. These tics do not reflect an individual's beliefs and are not intended as such.”
They continued, “John Davidson is an executive producer of the BAFTA-nominated film I Swear, which draws from his personal experiences. We take the responsibility for the well-being of all our guests very seriously and prioritize inclusion. We took steps to inform attendees about the tics, announcing both before the ceremony and throughout that John was present and they might hear strong language, involuntary sounds, or movements during the event.”
“At the start of the ceremony, a loud tic that included a profoundly offensive term was heard by many attendees. Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage during this moment, and we extend our unreserved apologies to them and to everyone affected. We express gratitude to Michael and Delroy for their remarkable dignity and professionalism. During the event, John opted to leave the auditorium and view the remainder of the ceremony from a screen, and we appreciate his dignity and consideration for others on what should have been a celebratory night for him. We accept full responsibility for placing our guests in a challenging situation and apologize to all involved. We will learn from this experience and continue to prioritize inclusion in all our endeavors, upholding our belief in film and storytelling as vital channels for compassion and empathy,” they concluded.
