Los Angeles, Feb 17 (NationPress) The acclaimed film ‘Emilia Perez’, directed by Jacques Audiard, won the award for Best Film Not in the English Language at the BAFTA Awards.
This victory occurred on Sunday, despite the controversy surrounding star Karla Sofia Gascon due to her inflammatory tweets, as reported by Variety.
During his acceptance speech, Audiard expressed gratitude towards Gascon, who was not present at the event and has largely been sidelined from the awards circuit.
“First and foremost, I wish to thank all the incredible artists who made this film a reality and who are here with us tonight,” he stated. “My beloved Zoe, my dear Selena, Giorgini, Paul, Juliet, Camille, Clement, Julia and your team, but also you, my cherished Karla Sofia, whom I embrace. I am profoundly proud of what we accomplished together. Long live ‘Emilia Perez’.”
According to Variety, voting for the BAFTAs concluded last week but had been ongoing since early January, suggesting that many voters may have cast their votes for ‘Emilia Perez’ prior to the emergence of the controversy regarding Gascón a few weeks ago.
The British Academy previously announced that Gascon was not expected to participate in the awards, having released a list of guests from which she was notably absent. This decision followed her recent apology, in which she expressed hope that her “silence will enable the film to be celebrated for what it is, a beautiful tribute to love and diversity.”
Although Gascon missed the BAFTAs, just as she had the Critics Choice Awards, PGA Awards, and Goya Awards, her co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana attended, both nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. They were also among the presenters at the event.
