Zoe Saldana addressed the controversy regarding Karla Sofia Gascon's racist tweets
During a Q&A session in London, Saldana, 46, expressed, “I’m still processing everything that has transpired in the last couple of days, and I’m sad”, in response to the emergence of bigoted posts from her fellow Oscar nominee, as reported by ‘People’ magazine.
She further stated to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, “It makes me really sad because I don’t support (it), and I don’t tolerate any negative rhetoric towards people from any group. My experiences with everyone involved in this film were rooted in inclusivity, collaboration, and equity across race, culture, and gender. It just saddens me”.
According to ‘People’, Gascon, 52, has since issued an apology and deactivated her X (previously known as Twitter) account following the backlash over her now-deleted posts criticizing Muslim culture, George Floyd, diversity at the Oscars, and more.
In her statement to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ that same day, the Spanish actress referred to a “campaign of hate and misinformation” and added, “I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or will feel offended in the future. I am a human who has made and will continue to make mistakes from which I will learn. I am not perfect”.
During a Q&A alongside ‘Emilia Perez’ writer-director Jacques Audiard and songwriters-composers Camille and Clement Ducol, an event Gascon was also slated to attend, Saldana remarked, “It saddens me that we are having to confront this setback right now. But I’m grateful that you’re all here and that you continue to support Emilia because the message of this film is immensely powerful and the change it can bring to marginalized communities is vital”.
“All I can affirm is that everyone who came together to tell this story did so out of love, respect, and curiosity, and we will keep spreading that message. That’s all we can say right now. Thank you”, she concluded.
