Legendary Tamil film director Bharathiraja passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 June in Chennai, plunging the Tamil film industry into mourning. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay visited the director's residence in Neelangarai to pay his last respects to the Padma Shri awardee, who had been battling health issues for some time.

A Pioneer Who Defined Tamil Cinema

Bharathiraja — born Chinnasamy on 17 July 1941 in Alli Nagaram, Theni district, to Periya Mayathevar and Meenakshi Ammal alias Karuthammal — became one of the most consequential voices in Tamil and Indian cinema. Over an illustrious career spanning roughly 44 films, he championed rural Tamil life on screen, weaving stories around societal realities with a sensitivity rarely seen before him.

His debut feature, '16 Vayathinile', immediately announced his stature: the film featured Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Sridevi in lead roles and earned him the Tamil Nadu state award for best direction for a debut film. He went on to win six National Awards across his career. Actress Revathi, who was introduced to Tamil cinema by Bharathiraja, paid tribute on Instagram: 'RIP Bharathiraja Sir — the reason that I am here as an Actor and did the films I did.' Actor Shanthanu wrote: 'The legend who put Tamil soil on the silver screen forever. A visionary who gave Tamil cinema its soul has left us, but his footprints will remain for the generations to come.'

Music director and actor G V Prakash Kumar said: 'Barathiraja sir. Really saddened to hear this. The stalwart who changed cinema and inspired so many film makers.'

Beyond direction, Bharathiraja was also a notable actor. He made his acting debut in 'Kallukkul Eeram' and went on to appear in films including 'Nizhalgal', 'Dhaavani Kanavugal', 'Idhayam', 'Aayudha Ezhuthu', 'Rettai Suzhi', 'Pandiya Naadu', 'Seethakaadhi', 'Maanaadu', 'Eeswaran', and 'Thiruchitrambalam'.

His signature opening lines — 'En Iniya Tamil Makkale...' — remain iconic in Tamil Nadu to this day, a testament to the cultural imprint he left far beyond the screen.
