Bhuvan Bam on playing Rash Behari Bose in 'The Revolutionaries'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor and YouTuber Bhuvan Bam has opened up about the creative freedom he exercised while portraying Rash Behari Bose in the recently released period drama series 'The Revolutionaries', now streaming on Prime Video. Bam revealed that limited visual documentation of the revolutionary leader gave him room to build the character in his own way — with the blessing of director Nikkhil Advani.
How the Character Took Shape
Bam admitted he had little prior knowledge of Rash Behari Bose before being cast. 'I told my friends that I am playing Bose in this show and everyone said, 'Subhash Chandra Bose'. I was like, 'No, Rash Behari Bose',' he said, reflecting on how that moment made him realise how underrepresented the freedom fighter is in popular consciousness.
He noted that while substantial information about Rash Behari Bose exists online, there is very little visual record of the leader — a gap that paradoxically gave the actor more interpretive latitude. 'He is not much documented visually,' Bam said.
Nikkhil Advani's Role in the Creative Process
Bam credited director Nikkhil Advani for nurturing the performance. He recalled approaching Advani early in the shoot: 'Sir, I want to bring in my own flavour to this character. So, if you allow me, I will do it in a certain way. If you like it, I will continue this for the next 70 days.' Advani agreed, and by the fifth or sixth day of filming, Bam said he had found the pitch and tone he wanted to carry through the series.
To describe the character's versatility, Bam reached for a cricket analogy: 'He was like Ravindra Jadeja, he could do anything, and would fit in any role.' The comparison underlines the all-round nature Bam sought to portray — a figure capable of shifting strategy and role as the independence movement demanded.
About the Series
'The Revolutionaries' chronicles Indian freedom fighters who believed that armed resistance was not just important but essential to ending British colonial rule. The show traces how sustained revolutionary efforts compelled the British empire to shift its capital from Kolkata to Delhi. The series is produced by Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani under the banner of Emmay Entertainment and is written by Sanjeev Sanyal.
The cast also features Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta, and Gurfateh Parizada, alongside Bam. The show is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
What to Expect
With 'The Revolutionaries' positioning itself as a retelling of a lesser-documented chapter of India's independence movement, Bam's portrayal of Rash Behari Bose — a figure who remains relatively obscure in mainstream historical memory — could bring renewed attention to the revolutionary's legacy. The series arrives at a time of growing audience appetite for historically grounded Indian content on streaming platforms.
