Hollywood actor Casey Affleck has revealed that he always knew his childhood friend Matt Damon was destined for superstardom — and that there was never any question about where Damon was headed. Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival, the 51-year-old actor offered a rare, candid look at the early years he shared with Damon and older brother Ben Affleck as they all chased their acting dreams together.

A Shared Theatre Teacher Who Changed Everything

Casey recalled that the trio's passion for performance was kindled by a single influential mentor. 'We all had the same theatre teacher, and lots of actors came through this one theater department. We were in a big public school, and we just had this great theatre teacher, and he made kids fall in love with theatre and acting,' he said at the festival.

The Affleck brothers grew up in the same household as Damon during their formative years, with their father working as a stage manager — a background that actively encouraged both brothers to pursue the craft from an early age.

Damon Was Always the Showstopper

Even as a child, Casey said, Damon stood apart from his peers. 'Matt was always a bit of a showoff. (He was) outgoing and would do talent shows and stuff. And there was no doubt where he was headed, but the rest of us were trying to figure it out,' Casey said.

The friendship between Casey and Damon spans four decades. Casey has himself appeared alongside Damon in films including 'Good Will Hunting' and 'Ocean's Eleven', cementing a professional bond that grew out of that shared school-theatre experience.

Casey on Damon's Rare Dual Appeal

Casey was effusive about what makes Damon genuinely unusual in Hollywood. 'Matt is a super talented actor. He's a funny case because he's a very talented actor who has a kind of movie star persona, a matinee idol appeal, at the same time, which Ben and I don't really have,' he said, drawing a distinction between his own career trajectory and that of his more marquee-friendly peers.

He noted that Ben Affleck leaned into the leading-man archetype early on, while he himself carved out a different space. 'Ben seems more like a movie star and has leaned into the leading man thing right from early on,' Casey observed.

Why Casey Embraces Being Hollywood's Outsider

Rather than lamenting his reputation as an industry outsider, Casey said he has made peace with it — and even come to cherish it. 'I saw that and I thought, 'Man, I'll forever be thought of as an outsider, no matter what I do'. You can win an Oscar, or you can do a big giant studio movie, and I think the public just thinks of people one way, and then it takes a lot to change that,' he explained.

He added that after sitting with that realisation, his reaction surprised even himself. 'I was sitting with it for a second, and I thought, 'Am I crazy? I love that'. I don't want to be an insider. I love being an outsider. I would much rather be an outsider in Hollywood than be an insider in Hollywood. I don't think it's a great culture. I don't love the movies that are made by Hollywood. I don't love the system of Hollywood, and I'm very happy being thought of as an outsider,' he said.

The remarks offer a window into how Casey has navigated a career that has consistently defied easy categorisation — and suggest he has no intention of changing course anytime soon.
