Mumbai, May 25 (NationPress) Actor Vardhaan Puri, grandson of the legendary Amrish Puri from Hindi cinema, is commemorating 38 years of the iconic science fiction film ‘Mr. India’, where his grandfather portrayed the unforgettable character of Mogambo.
Vardhaan discussed how the villain's portrayal, marked by his malevolent intentions towards society, continues to captivate audiences of all ages worldwide. In a conversation with IANS, he expressed his admiration for Amrish Puri, Hindi cinema's beloved villain and character actor.
He stated, “Mogambo is a globally recognized character, and his relevance keeps escalating with time. The impact of the phrase ‘Mogambo, Khush Hua’ in the cinematic world exemplifies the artistry that my grandfather Amrish Puri, director Shekhar Kapur, and writer Javed Akhtar crafted.”
Vardhaan elaborated, “From his dramatic delivery to his striking bulging eyes and deep voice, along with the iconic costume including gold and black attire, wig, rings, and baton, Mogambo's character design has won the hearts of moviegoers, especially children, who are his most ardent fans.”
Directed by the esteemed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, ‘Mr. India’ was based on a script by the renowned duo Salim-Javed, marking their final collaboration before their split.
The story revolves around Arun, a street violinist and philanthropist who rents an old house for orphans, using his newfound invisibility to battle Mogambo, a criminal with aspirations to dominate India.
Mogambo runs his operations from a concealed island, overseeing the nefarious acts of his henchmen. His commands, such as “Mogambo khush hua” and “Hail Mogambo!” reflect his total control over his followers.
Vardhaan emphasized, “Much of Mogambo’s allure is attributed to Shekhar Kapur sir, who suggested my grandfather approach the role as if performing Shakespeare for an audience of eight-year-olds. When a child loves a villain, you know you’ve created something timeless and iconic.”
Vardhaan made his acting debut in ‘Yeh Saali Aashiqui’ and was last seen in the digital film ‘Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story’, directed by Kunal Kohli.
