What Challenges Did Celina Jaitly Face During Her Twin Pregnancy?

Mumbai, June 19 (NationPress) Actress Celina Jaitly bravely shared her journey through significant health challenges during her twin pregnancy, highlighting an often-overlooked aspect of motherhood. In a heartfelt post on Instagram, she revealed her battles with gestational diabetes, cholestasis, and other medical issues while expecting. By openly discussing her experience, Celina aims to raise awareness about high-risk pregnancies and support other women facing similar struggles. Alongside a collection of photos with her children, the 'No Entry' star remarked, “#maternalhealth - When the Itch Could Have Taken My Babies: My Battle With Cholestasis. I was born with a rare genetic gift, a tendency to hyperovulate. I experienced two spontaneous twin pregnancies, a trait inherited from generations of women in my family. I later discovered that my mother also had twins after my brother and me, tragically losing them after a fall in Ranikhet. Even my great-great-grandmother succumbed to complications during a twin pregnancy.”

“Both my pregnancies were incredibly challenging. I faced gestational diabetes and severe SPD, and in both cases, I developed cholestasis of Pregnancy, a rare liver condition more prevalent in twin pregnancies. It was an emotionally taxing experience. It begins with intense itching on the palms and soles, sleepless nights, and a profound concern for your baby’s wellbeing. Cholestasis isn’t merely a ‘pregnancy itch’; it serves as a warning from your liver that something is awry. After my compassionate gynaecologist diagnosed me, I was referred to a hepatologist—a Jordanian doctor who comforted me in a Dubai hospital and offered a prayer. His blend of science and faith left a lasting impact on me, reminding me of the importance of compassion in healthcare.”

Celina Jaitly further explained that cholestasis during pregnancy is a liver disorder that can significantly affect both the baby and the mother. For the baby, it raises the risks of preterm birth, fetal distress, and the occurrence of meconium-stained amniotic fluid, which can complicate delivery. In severe cases, untreated cholestasis could even lead to stillbirth. For the mother, this condition often results in severe itching—particularly on the hands and feet—due to bile acids accumulating in the bloodstream.

The actress also noted that she received treatment with Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), a medication typically prescribed to reduce bile acid levels and ease the discomfort associated with cholestasis.
