Padma Shri awardee and playback singer Sonu Nigam on Saturday announced his son Nevaan Nigam's debut venture into the world of short films and music videos, sharing the news via an emotional Instagram post on the occasion of Diwali. The debut project, titled 'Slide', is a sci-fi short film in which Nevaan plays the protagonist — a character who travels back in time using a time-travel device.

A Path of His Own

Sonu Nigam made it clear that Nevaan is consciously charting a course distinct from his musical lineage. In his caption, the senior singer wrote: 'On this auspicious and pious occasion of Diwali, Nevaan embarks upon his journey into the world of Music venturing into a path far flung from his Grandfather and Father to explore his own horizons.' The phrasing carries deliberate weight — both Nevaan's grandfather and father are icons of Indian playback singing, making his chosen path a statement of creative independence rather than inheritance.

From Shy Boy to Studio Performer

Sonu Nigam documented his son's transformation in striking detail. 'From a chubby little boy to a fit and lean young man, from someone who was extremely shy to sing in front of his own father, to someone who's practicing the vocal exercises taught to him by his brilliant vocal coach 16 hours a day and cracking one take recordings in the studio with the legend Poo Bear,' he wrote. Poo Bear, whose real name is Jason William Boyd, is an internationally acclaimed songwriter and producer known for his collaborations with Justin Bieber, among others. Nevaan has also committed to hours of daily dance practice, according to his father's account.

A Musical Childhood in the Spotlight

Nevaan's association with music began early. Sonu Nigam recalled that at age 4, Nevaan was already in the studio performing 'Kolaveri Di', and by age 4 and a half, he had performed 'Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin' live on stage — moments that reportedly drew enormous audience affection. This context makes his current formal debut both a natural progression and a significant public moment for the family.

What 'Slide' Is About

'Slide' is a sci-fi short film with Nevaan in the lead role, navigating a narrative built around time travel. While further technical details of the project — including the director, production house, and release platform — have not been publicly disclosed, the announcement itself has drawn attention given the family's standing in Indian music.
