Actor Upendra Chauhan has opened up about his part in director Meghna Gulzar's upcoming investigative thriller 'Daayra', revealing that his character operates firmly within Kareena Kapoor Khan's investigative unit as the film explores a case from two competing perspectives. The film is set for release on 18 September.

Chauhan's Character and His Place in the Story

In his own words, Chauhan described how his entry into the narrative unfolds. 'I get called by Kareena Kapoor Khan in the film to make a team for this investigation. The movie basically shows both sides of the investigation — Prithviraj Sukumaran's side and Kareena Kapoor Khan's side in the pursuit of justice,' he said.

He elaborated further: 'My investigation, my character, is on the Kareena Kapoor side of the film. He is in her team and he is playing a policeman. The focus of Kareena Kapoor Khan's side is to understand how valid the investigation of Prithviraj Sukumaran's team was.'

The actor's role, therefore, serves as a narrative counterweight — his policeman character helping Kareena's team scrutinise the legitimacy of the parallel investigation led by Prithviraj Sukumaran's character, adding a layer of procedural tension to the thriller's structure.

A Second Collaboration with Meghna Gulzar

'Daayra' marks Chauhan's second project with Gulzar, following their earlier work together on 'Sam Bahadur'. The reunion suggests a degree of creative trust between the actor and the filmmaker, who is known for her research-driven, character-focused storytelling.

Notably, Kareena Kapoor Khan steps into the role of a police officer in the film — a departure from her recent outings. She was last seen in director Hansal Mehta's 'The Buckingham Murders', where she also played an investigative lead, signalling a deliberate shift in the kind of roles she is pursuing.
