Los Angeles, Oct 24 (NationPress) Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone revealed that she temporarily adopted a stage name for six months after learning she could not use her birth name, Emily Stone, in Hollywood.
During her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 36-year-old star shared: "I actually took on a stage name for about six months. The Screen Actors Guild operates like the Business Bureau, and only one person can hold a particular name."
At the age of 16, she chose to go by Riley for that period, saying: "I became Riley Stone, which is a lovely name." However, she faced challenges getting accustomed to the name during her work.
Stone recounted, "I had a guest role on Malcolm in the Middle, and they kept calling out: ‘Riley! Riley!’ I had no clue who they were addressing. I thought: ‘I can’t be Riley. It just felt so random.'"
"I thought to myself: 'Great name. I’ll go with Riley.'" Eventually, she opted for Emma Stone, as it closely resembled her real name, Emily, according to reports from femalefirst.co.uk.
She expressed her desire to revert back to Emily, citing the confusion it sometimes creates. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she noted: "When I get to know them, people I work with do call me Emily. It’s simply because my name was already taken by another actress. A few years ago, I panicked and said: 'I can’t handle it anymore. Just call me Emily.'"
When asked if she would correct fans calling her Emily instead of Emma, she replied, "No. That would be so kind. I would love to be Emily."
