Los Angeles, December 24 (NationPress) Hollywood star Kate Winslet quickly developed a strong rapport with actor Fisayo Akinade upon their first encounter.
During a casual coffee conversation, she promptly offered him a role in her directorial debut film, 'Goodbye June', according to reports from 'Deadline'.
This film, which has just released on Netflix after a limited theatrical run, features Akinade, who is well-known for his exceptional stage performances. Just days before this pivotal meeting, Akinade was enjoying a ride on the upper deck of a London bus when his agent delivered the surprising news that Winslet wanted to meet him.
“I exclaimed, ‘How the f* does she know who I am?’” he recalled. His agent then revealed the impressive cast he might be acting alongside, which included Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Timothy Spall, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, and Winslet herself.
“‘What the f* is going on?,’” Akinade remembered saying. The film, penned by Joe Anders, the son of Winslet and Sam Mendes, revolves around a family matriarch passing away during Christmas. Winslet envisioned Akinade in the role of Angel, a nurse in the cancer ward looking after Mirren’s character, June, as her family awaits by her bedside. Their meeting took place at the Soho Hotel.
As Akinade dashed to the restroom, he spotted Winslet. “I thought, ‘Wow. This is a woman I've admired since I was about 12, and here she is, so genuine, warm, funny, and honest’. We enjoyed coffee together; she shared insights about the film and her journey. Then she declared, ‘I want you to do it. You’re the only one I’m considering’.”
They reached an agreement, and Winslet invited him to help audition children for the film, even suggesting he read with them.
