How Did Kate Winslet Manage Unwanted Attention?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Dec 23 (NationPress) Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet believes life becomes significantly more enjoyable with a delicious meal and a bit of Radiohead, which were key in helping her navigate unwanted attention.
The director and actress of Goodbye June reflected on the terrifying intrusion into her private life during her younger years, sharing how she discovered small sources of joy while facing scrutiny, especially during a tumultuous period in one of her marriages.
During her appearance on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, she revealed that she managed the attention through simple pleasures like a good meal, engaging conversations, a nice cup of coffee, some Radiohead music, and even a good poo.
She noted, “You know, life’s all the better for those things.”
While filming Titanic in her early 20s, Winslet admitted she was not in a good mental place regarding her body image. Once the film premiered and she became an international sensation, her world was completely turned upside down, leaving her terrified of the constant invasion into her life.
She expressed, “I wasn’t prepared for that world. It was horrific. There were people tapping my phone. They were just everywhere. I felt utterly alone and scared to go to sleep.”
Winslet also shared her experience of being advised to accept “fat-girl parts” by a drama teacher if she wanted to succeed in acting.
She recounted, “I was a bit stocky, and when I took acting more seriously, a drama teacher told me, ‘Well, darling, you’ll have a career if you’re ready to settle for the fat girl parts.’ Just look at me now. It’s appalling what people say to children.”
The actress believes there’s still much to unlearn about how women are spoken to in film, mentioning that as a first-time director, she received comments that would never be directed at a man.
She stated, “They might say things like, ‘Don’t forget to be confident in your choices.’ I want to respond, ‘Don’t lecture me on confidence,’ because if there’s one thing I’ve never lacked, it’s that. No one would dare say that to a man.”
