Choreographer Geeta Kapur has shared vivid memories of working with Hrithik Roshan during the making of his debut film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai in late 1999, describing the then-newcomer as someone who left the entire crew in disbelief at his preparedness and natural ability. Speaking in the context of her current appearance on the dance reality show India's Best Dancer, Kapur said she assisted on every song in the film — and that the experience redefined her benchmark for a dancing hero on screen.

First Impressions on Set

Kapur recalled that Hrithik arrived on set having already done extensive homework — studying his choreography, understanding his character's physical language, and arriving ready to absorb direction from both the choreographer and the filmmaker. 'Before he came on the set and started shooting, he had done so much homework, so much study, and had learnt so much about how he needed to dance. He had such an open mind and was so willing to listen to the choreographer and the director,' she said.

The character demanded a dual register — a gentle, restrained persona in the first half, and a confident, charismatic dancer in the second. Kapur said Hrithik navigated both with a fluency that seemed impossible for a first-time actor. 'He was new, so there had to be some shortcomings or some mistakes. But for me, he was perfect, perfect in every take,' she added.

Redefining the Dancing Hero

Kapur placed Hrithik's arrival in a broader cultural context, noting that before him, Govinda had been the definitive reference point for a dancing hero in Hindi cinema. She said Hrithik's debut marked the beginning of a new era. 'After a very long time, I saw an artist, a boy, who defined what a good dancer could be on screen. He was a good actor and a good dancer too... After that came the era of Hrithik Roshan,' she said.

Her fellow assistants on the film reportedly shared the same disbelief. 'When we were assisting, we would wonder, "Is this boy really doing his first film? Impossible!" Because he was so good,' Kapur recalled.

The Iconic 'Ek Pal Ka Jeena' Hook Step

Among the specific memories Kapur shared was the teaching of the now-iconic hook step from 'Ek Pal Ka Jeena', one of the film's most recognisable songs. She said that while she expected the step to be manageable, what Hrithik brought to it — a natural flexibility and a personal physical quality — elevated it beyond what she had anticipated. 'Thousands of people perform the hook step from 'Ek Pal Ka Jeena', but I have never seen anyone else do it the way he did,' she said.

About Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai released in January 2000 and was directed, written, and produced by Rakesh Roshan, Hrithik's father. The film also marked the debut of actress Ameesha Patel and featured a supporting cast that included Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil, Mohnish Bahl, Farida Jalal, Satish Shah, and Ashish Vidyarthi. The film turned Hrithik into a nationwide sensation almost immediately upon release, with his screen presence, dancing ability, and dual-role performance becoming its defining talking points.

Hrithik subsequently headlined a string of major productions including Koi... Mil Gaya, Dhoom 2, Jodhaa Akbar, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Agneepath, Krrish 3, and War, cementing a career built equally on acting range and dance. Kapur's recollections suggest that the foundation for all of it was visible from day one of his very first film.
