Punjabi actor and producer Gippy Grewal, who is set to return to screens with Carry On Jatta 4 on 26 June, has opened up about a chapter of his life far removed from the spotlight — the years he spent working multiple jobs in Canada just to stay afloat. Speaking on Shekhar Suman's talk show Shekhar Tonite, Grewal offered a candid account of the grind that eventually funded his musical comeback.

Life Before Stardom

Before Grewal became a household name in Punjabi entertainment, he had released three albums — none of which gained significant traction. After his third album failed to make an impact, he married his girlfriend and relocated to Canada, where the couple had to rebuild their lives entirely from the ground up.

'After my marriage, I moved to Canada. I started working there and took up several different jobs,' Grewal recalled during the show.

Three Jobs at Once

Grewal's first employment in Canada was as a security guard. That was only the beginning. He soon found himself juggling three jobs simultaneously. Mornings were spent delivering newspapers alongside his wife, who would then head to her role as a manager at Subway. Evenings brought a third commitment — a cleaning contract at a mall, which the couple handled together.

'My first job, sir, was as a security guard. Later, I was doing three jobs at the same time. In the mornings, my wife and I used to deliver newspapers, after which she would leave for work,' he said.

How the Struggle Brought Them Closer

Grewal described those demanding days not with bitterness but with warmth, noting that the shared hardship deepened his bond with his wife. The early morning newspaper rounds and late-evening cleaning shifts became, in his telling, a space for the couple to plan their future together.

'Those two jobs, delivering newspapers in the morning and cleaning in the evening, when the two of us did them together, we would have so many conversations. We would discuss our plans — what we wanted to do, how we wanted to do it, and what steps we needed to take,' he said.

He added: 'We saved the money we earned, put it together, and that's when I made my album…'

The Road Back to the Screen

That album, funded by savings from those multiple jobs, marked the turning point in Grewal's career. He went on to establish himself as one of Punjabi cinema's most bankable stars and producers. The Carry On Jatta franchise, which he has been central to, is now entering its fourth installment. The first film released in 2012, followed by sequels in 2018 and 2023.
