Mumbai, Oct 6 (NationPress) Filmmaker Hansal Mehta, renowned for works like ‘Aligarh’, ‘Shahid’, and ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’, is reflecting on the nostalgic journey of his film ‘Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar’, which marks its 25th anniversary since its release.
On Monday, the director took to Instagram to share the film's poster along with a heartfelt message in the caption. He expressed his thoughts on how the film deviated from its initial vision due to compromises made during its production.
He noted, “I was reminded that it’s 25 years since ‘Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar’ premiered, and it brings a bittersweet feeling. The film started with a brilliant script by Saurabh Shukla—sharp, humorous, subversive, and brimming with possibilities. Yet, during moments of vulnerability, we altered it. Manoj’sbetrayal and the unseen aspects of human nature when confronted with desperation and greed.
He also pointed out the irony that the film, which critiques greed, fell victim to the very greed of market forces.
“What could have been raw and shocking turned out to be milder, sometimes even sycophantic towards its lead actor. The irony isn’t lost on me: a narrative about greed was ultimately undone by greed itself. It flopped. Now, I hear the film’s negatives have been lost—destroyed due to carelessness, negligence, or perhaps even divine intervention. A cosmic reminder that good intentions, when tainted by selfish desires, seldom result in quality execution,” he shared.
“Its failure led me down paths of alcohol, debt, and bankruptcy. Yet here I stand, 25 years later, still recounting the tale. The film brought me friends, cost me friendships, and imparted lessons I cherish today. I am thankful for those lessons. I’ve found my peace—with myself and with those I once held accountable for the film's downfall. Someday, I’ll elaborate more on this chapter in my memoirs,” he concluded.
