Mumbai, Aug 18 (NationPress) Actress Harleen Kaur Rekhi, portraying the titular role of Kaamdhenu Devi in the series Kaamdhenu Gaumata, disclosed that the process of embodying her character would take her at least two hours.
The actress expressed, "Transforming physically is essential—you cannot present the same persona in every role. For instance, if I portray Mandodari, my appearance should differ significantly from when I play Sita Maa. Every detail, from body language to posture, and how one adorns the costume, is crucial."
She mentioned, "For Kaamdhenu Gaumata, the time to get into character involved a minimum of two hours, which included hair, makeup, costume, jewelry, and alta. Mastering shudh Hindi is also imperative in such productions, as it is deeply intertwined with our culture. Fortunately, my theatre background provided me with a solid foundation. Whenever I encountered unfamiliar words, I would consult my director or team for clarity."
Discussing her initial reaction to being cast, she shared, "I auditioned for the role in September, but it didn’t materialize at the time. Then, after around three and a half months, I received a call indicating they wished to finalize my casting."
The actress admitted she was taken aback.
“During the look tests, I found myself thinking, 'I just want to begin filming!' The uncertainty of our profession often leaves you feeling that nothing is real until you're actually on set,” she explained.
“When I first met Prem Sagar sir at his office, we instantly clicked. He felt like a mentor, and now we share a wonderful relationship. This is my debut as a main lead on such a significant platform. After 14–15 years in the industry, I’ve finally achieved this milestone,” she continued.
Produced by Prem Sagar and Shiv Sagar under the banner of Sagar World Multimedia, the show premiered on Star Bharat on August 11.
Preparing for her role proved to be both intense and profoundly rewarding.
She stated, "Coming from a theatre background and having performed in Ramleela for over a decade, I already possessed a foundation in shudh Hindi. Nevertheless, I ensured to delve deeper—I requested the entire storyboard from Prem sir, and Shiv Sagar ji, along with our creative head Abhishek, provided me with 10–12 episodes for thorough study."
“I also dedicated time with mentors and the creative team to grasp every nuance of my character. Portraying a lead in such a meaningful narrative felt like a culmination of years of learning,” she remarked.
Playing a mythological character necessitates specific physical transformations and an accurate dialect from that era. For Harleen, both aspects were equally vital and challenging.
She emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between reel and real life while portraying a mythological character.
She noted, "I believe you should carry forward the positive traits your character embodies—such as calmness, compassion, or spiritual strength. However, if you’re portraying a dark or negative character, you must be careful not to let it influence your real personality.”
“Avoid becoming stubborn or aggressive off-screen. That emotional discipline is essential,” concluded Harleen.
