Veteran Bollywood actress Hema Malini has opened up about her decades-long friendship with fellow star Rekha, revealing that the two first crossed paths not on a film set but in a Kuchipudi dance class in Chennai — long before either became a household name in Hindi cinema. 'Whenever I went for dance classes, Rekha would also come there. She was just a little girl then. Guru ji would always say that she would run away from rehearsals and was very difficult to catch. She was extremely mischievous,' Hema Malini recalled on the show.

Rekha as Narad Muni: An Early Stage Performance

Hema Malini also shared a vivid memory of one of Rekha's early stage appearances — a dance ballet choreographed by Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam based on the story of Krishna, Rukmini, and Satyabhama. In that production, a young Rekha performed the role of Narad Muni in the Kuchipudi style.

'She looked adorable in the Narad Muni costume and gave a remarkable performance. At that time, I had no idea that a few years later she would come to Bombay and become such a big Hindi film star,' Hema Malini said. From Dance Class to Film Sets

The two actresses went on to share the screen in nearly eight films, according to host Aditya Narayan. Their on-screen collaboration began with 'Gora Aur Kala' in 1972, followed by Feroz Khan's cult classic 'Dharmatma' in 1975, and later the family drama 'Apne Apne' in 1987. Hema Malini noted that it was during the shooting of 'Gora Aur Kala' that the two revisited their shared memories from the dance class years and deepened their bond. 'Today we are very good friends, just like sisters,' she said.
