Why Did Kate Hudson Decline the Role of Mary Jane in ‘Spider-Man’?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Dec 24 (NationPress) Actress Kate Hudson revealed that she was on the verge of taking the role of Mary Jane Watson in the 2002 film “Spider-Man”, but ultimately decided against it, a role that was later given to Kirsten Dunst.
Reflecting on her choice, she mentioned on “Watch What Happens Live” with host Andy Cohen, “It’s one of those things where I look back like, ‘That would have been nice to be in a ‘Spider-Man’ movie.’”
She shared details about the film she chose instead, according to reports from variety.com.
Hudson explained, “But at the same time, I did a movie called ‘Four Feathers’. I got to meet Heath Ledger, who became a very good friend, and I experienced something I would have never had otherwise.”
“Four Feathers” was released shortly after “Spider-Man” and featured Hudson alongside Heath Ledger, Djimon Hounsou, and Wes Bentley in a war drama.
She continued, “A part of me is like, ‘Life happens exactly the way it’s supposed to.’ I’m grateful for it. But I do look at it and think, ‘Aw, it would have been fun to be Mary Jane.’”
The “Spider-Man” film went on to earn $826 million and led to a trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire and Dunst, all directed by Sam Raimi. Maguire retired his web-shooters after “Spider-Man 3” in 2007 but returned for the MCU’s crossover film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021.
She also mentioned, “It doesn’t feel good to talk about it because the people who are in the movie are the right ones, and your circumstances in life unfold as they should.”
Hudson noted that she has also turned down movie offers that would star her alongside her mother, actress Goldie Hawn.
“It’s gotta be really funny. It’s got to hit differently. We think about it; we just haven’t found the right script yet,” she added.
