Tamil horror thriller Immortal, directed by Mariyappan Chinna and starring G V Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar, will now release worldwide on September 4 this year, the film's makers announced on Wednesday, 15 July. The date change comes after actor Vijay's long-awaited political drama Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, claimed the July 23 release slot that Immortal had originally occupied.

Why the Release Was Pushed

The makers of Immortal had locked in July 23 as their release date after an earlier plan to open the film in May this year did not materialise. However, the announcement by the Jana Nayagan team — also on Wednesday — that Vijay's film would arrive on July 23 effectively forced a rethink. G V Prakash acknowledged the clash with characteristic candour, writing on X: 'Thalapathy vandha thalli poyi dhaaney aaganum. Adhuvum one Last time…. (When the Thalapathy arrives, we need to make way. That too, one last time.) Best of luck team JN … #immortal will release in theatres on September 4th with your support and love.'

The post was a nod to Vijay's fan-given title 'Thalapathy', and the phrase 'one last time' is widely read as a reference to Jana Nayagan being Vijay's final Tamil film before his political career takes centre stage.

What to Expect from Immortal

The film blends romantic comedy with supernatural horror, as established by a teaser released last year that drew strong audience interest. The teaser opens on a light, flirtatious note — G V Prakash's character, a self-confessed romantic, moves into a flat and strikes up a banter-filled dynamic with Kayadu Lohar's character. The mood pivots sharply when he peers through a keyhole at night and encounters a bat-faced creature, signalling the film's horror core.

G V Prakash had confirmed in May this year that the shoot was fully wrapped. The film features a supporting cast that includes TM Karthik, Kumar Natarajan, Lollu Sabha Maaran, Aaditya Kathir, Arshu Maharjan, Pema Tsamchoe, and Sunita Shrestha.
