The star of ‘Sex and the City’, aged 43, made an unexpected visit to the popular Broadway show at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. Hudson appeared in the second season of the 2012 television series that served as the inspiration for this stage adaptation, according to ‘People’ magazine.
This Oscar winner is also part of the musical's prominent producing team, which includes Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron, and Steven Spielberg. Hudson took to the stage to honor the cast and even performed a snippet of a song her character sang in the series. Following the cast's bows, led by Robyn Hurder and Caroline Bowman, who portrayed Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee on screen, songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman introduced the EGOT winner.
According to ‘People’, Hudson energized the audience by exclaiming, “Was that not an amazing show?” After embracing Hurder warmly, she expressed her admiration for the performance. “It is such an honor to watch you guys do what you do... It inspires you. Don’t you want to be on Broadway now? That’s what this show has done.”
“Your talent is incredible,” Hudson continued, praising the cast. “Each and every one of you are stars. I’m so inspired to be a small part of this.”
Shaiman then posed the question on everyone’s mind, “J. Hud? If I twisted your arm, would you give us just a few bars of the song we wrote for you?” Hudson obliged, singing a few lines of “I Can’t Let Go,” which was penned by Shaiman and Wittman for the show's second season.
Before leaving the stage, she told the cast, “I’m so proud of you all.” Notably, she was absent from the musical's premiere on April 10, which featured celebrities like Billy Crystal, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, and Nathan Lane, along with several former Smash cast members, including Debra Messing and Christian Borle.
She later addressed her absence in an Instagram post, clarifying that she was in Los Angeles filming an episode of her talk show. “I can't be in two places at once,” she explained from her show's set. “I have to be here with you, so I’m going to miss opening night, but I hope everyone enjoys the show.”
