Los Angeles, Aug 31 (NationPress) English actor Jude Law is fully on board with taking on the role of the Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the forthcoming film ‘The Wizard of the Kremlin’.

This political thriller is directed by Olivier Assayas and is slated to debut this Sunday at the Venice Film Festival, according to reports from Variety.

“I hope not naively, but I didn’t fear repercussions. I felt confident, in the hands of Olivier and the script, that this story was going to be told intelligently and with nuance and consideration,” the actor stated during the film’s official press conference on Sunday afternoon. “We weren’t looking for controversy for controversy’s sake. It’s a character in a broader story. We weren’t trying to define anything about anyone.”

As reported by Variety, the film is based on Giuliano da Empoli’s 2022 bestselling book of the same name. ‘The Wizard of the Kremlin’ offers a fictional portrayal of Putin’s rise to power amidst the chaos of the post-Soviet era, as well as his connection with spin doctor Vadim Baranov (played by Paul Dano). While Baranov is not a real person, he draws inspiration from Vladislav Surkov, a real-life strategist credited with shaping Putin’s public persona and authoritarian leadership style.

Joining Jude Law at the press conference were actors Alicia Vikander, Tom Sturridge, and Jeffrey Wright, who complete the ensemble cast.

Jude Law modified his appearance but opted to retain his own voice instead of adopting a strong Russian accent to portray a young Putin.

“Olivier and I discussed this wasn’t to be an interpretation of Putin, and he didn’t want me to hide behind a mask of prosthetics. We worked with an incredible makeup and hair team and had references of that period in Putin’s life. We tried to find a familiarity in me,” the actor explained. “It’s amazing what a great wig can do.”

Point of View
