Mumbai, July 9 (NationPress) Padma Bhushan awardee Shekhar Kapur has voiced his support for Artificial Intelligence in the content sector.
On Wednesday, the director shared a detailed note on his X account (formerly Twitter), expressing that AI represents the most significant advancement for storytellers. He described it as the most democratic technology ever.
He stated, “It's remarkable how oblivious individuals in the content industry are to the profound changes AI is inducing. We are either overly cautious about transformation or burying our heads in the sand. AI is the most democratic technology ever. Therefore, if you are a gatekeeper in the content sector, you might not last long. Soon, young creators will produce content that was once exclusive to high-budget studio films or shows, at an exceedingly low fraction of your costs.”
He also highlighted that even distribution will not pose a problem for AI-generated art, referencing the success of the Chinese short-video platform TikTok.
He noted, “The argument that they will still need our distribution is unfounded. Remember TikTok? It became a multi-billion dollar enterprise before Hollywood even recognized the term. This is the era for the best storytellers, not gatekeepers (sic).”
The dialogue surrounding AI's increasing role in the content industry has been ongoing for quite some time. The recent uproar over ChatGPT producing Studio Ghibli-style art stirred significant controversy within creative communities.
Resistance to technological advancements is not a new phenomenon; similar opposition has been observed since the onset of the industrial revolution. For instance, in West Bengal, the CPI (M) government prohibited computers in the 1980s but later utilized AI during election campaigns in the state. Ultimately, the progression of time and technology is unavoidable and heralds a new world order.
