Anubhuti Kashyap Explains the Inspiration Behind ‘Accused’
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 1 (NationPress) Director Anubhuti Kashyap has garnered significant acclaim for her new streaming film ‘Accused’, and she recently revealed the origins of its storyline.
During a promotional interview with IANS, she elaborated on a key element that propels the narrative: the repercussions of sexual harassment allegations on the lead character's relationship with her queer partner.
‘Accused’ centers around a woman accused of sexually harassing someone, featuring Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta in primary roles.
Kashyap explained to IANS, “The fundamental concept for the film originated from Netflix, which suggested we create a story focused on a woman facing sexual harassment allegations. That served as the foundation. Our research unveiled a surprising number of cases involving women accused of such offenses, particularly in India.”
She continued, “We delved into how such accusations impact entire relationships and the individual involved. The film revolves around the accused and their connections with those around them.”
“This became our starting point, allowing us to evaluate and develop additional characters organically,” she added.
Kashyap had also previously articulated the necessary elements for narrating this story.
She stated to IANS, “The subject required a specific lens and an empathetic approach. It couldn't be sensationalized. We consciously chose to present the story in a manner that highlights uncomfortable incidents, not just the queer relationship but also various other core themes.”
‘Accused’ is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
