Kumar Sanu Achieves Interim Relief in Defamation Case Against Ex-Wife and Digital Platforms
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 12 (NationPress) Renowned playback singer Kumar Sanu has achieved a noteworthy interim relief in the defamation lawsuit he initiated. The court has issued a crucial order granting interim protection against the singer's former spouse, as well as digital platforms Google and Meta, along with unnamed parties designated as John Doe defendants.
In light of this development, the singer's attorney, Sana Raees Khan, stressed that this relief represents a pivotal step toward preserving the reputation and dignity of individuals in today's digital landscape.
Commenting on the situation, Sana stated that the ruling emphasizes the necessity of accountability on social media and search engines when defamatory content appears online. She affirmed that safeguarding an individual's reputation is a core legal principle, regardless of their public status. The interim relief, she noted, protects Kumar Sanu's reputation as the case continues to unfold in court.
The court's ruling prohibits the dissemination and publication of defamatory material concerning Kumar Sanu, while also instructing digital intermediaries to take appropriate legal action. According to Sana, this case highlights the judiciary's growing role in tackling online defamation and shielding public figures from reputational damage stemming from digital platforms.
Previously, in October of the prior year, Kumar Sanu had filed a petition with the Delhi High Court to protect his “personality and publicity rights,” which encompass his name, voice, vocal style, mannerisms, images, caricatures, likeness, and signature.
The lawsuit alleged unauthorized or unlicensed commercial use of these characteristics (including through GIFs, audio/video recordings, AI-generated voice and facial morphing, and merchandise), which generate online revenue and threaten to dilute his persona. Consequently, the Delhi High Court granted interim protection, with the court verbally indicating that an interim injunction would safeguard his rights and ordered the removal of objectionable online content.
Reportedly, the court mandated digital platforms, AI developers, and intermediaries to eliminate unauthorized content mimicking his voice, likeness, and persona, and instructed the preservation of related data from specified platforms and e-commerce sites.
