Mumbai, March 9 (NationPress) Director Lakshmipriya Devi is thrilled about her Manipuri film ‘Boong’ winning a BAFTA. She recently discussed the unique casting journey that led her to Gugun Kipgen, the young actor portraying the lead role.

‘Boong’ is a touching coming-of-age story centered on a boy named Boong who resides with his mother in Manipur after his father's mysterious disappearance. In the hope of regaining his family's lost joy, Boong embarks on a journey with a friend to search for his father, even crossing into Myanmar during their adventure.

The narrative is set against the backdrop of social unrest in the region. The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and has been showcased at various festivals like Warsaw and MAMI Mumbai. In 2026, it earned the prestigious BAFTA Award for Best Children’s and Family Film, marking a historic moment as the first Indian film to achieve this accolade.

In an interview with IANS from her hometown, Lakshmipriya Devi revealed that the casting process heavily relied on word-of-mouth, given the absence of a formal casting framework in Manipuri cinema.

She explained, “The entire casting was based on recommendations. We lack a structured casting system in Manipur. So, it was about asking friends and family, ‘Do you know any boys who fit this description?’ We even approached kids we encountered in the market to audition. That’s how Gugun ended up auditioning. He was so self-assured. When we first met, he mentioned, ‘I can't audition because I don’t know the language.’ His cheeky demeanor immediately made me want to work with him.

“I talked with him, and he demonstrated a slingshot trick for me in a private setting. We bonded like friends, which was crucial for me. Even if another boy had been more suitable for the role, communication is key. Without it, what’s the point?”

‘Boong’, directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and produced by Excel Entertainment along with independent partners, is now showing in theaters.
