Mumbai, April 12 (NationPress) Actress Lisa Ray has opened up about the realities of being a geriatric mother and the unique challenges it entails. However, she believes that the blessings, lessons, and love that come with it far outweigh any difficulties.
On Instagram, she shared a nostalgic video of her baby Soleil, accompanied by the message: “that moment you realize your child will teach you as much about life as you will try to teach them.”
In her caption, the actress expressed her experience as a geriatric mother to her twins, Sufi and Soleil. She stated: “Hello, I’m Lisa Ray, a geriatric mother. This is not just a euphemism, but a technical term for any woman who conceives at 35 or older! This classification is outdated in a world where women are choosing to start families later through IVF and surrogacy.”
Lisa shared that she welcomed her “glorious twins,” Sufi and Soleil, at the age of 46 through surrogacy.
“A friend sent me this video of Soleil from a few years ago, and I realized I owe much of my healing and healthy habits to my girls,” she added.
She mentioned that her exercise routine is not just for her own well-being but also to keep up with “these twin forces of nature.”
“The girls have infused our home with music, dance, and revived my passion for performance art. They sing, dance, and express themselves freely. Although I can’t always keep up, I find myself dancing—albeit awkwardly—more than I have in years. I’ve also learned to embrace relaxation,” she remarked.
Lisa revealed that she views the world through a “curious lens.”
“Wonder and enchantment have returned to my life. Seeing the world through their inquisitive eyes and answering their questions (like when did Pluto become a planet? Where does blood come from? Can I plant a palm tree in my room?) has transformed my perspective. Striving for a childlike wonder has always been my goal (as opposed to being childish),” she shared.
Lisa has also mastered the art of patience.
“Patience is key. All those years of meditation have certainly paid off. Yet, my girls often highlight the tender and triggering aspects of my life. Do I feel overwhelmed? Absolutely. Has my patience improved? Definitely. These two realities can coexist,” she noted.
“Maintaining my health and flexibility is essential. Achieving a flexible spine is a hallmark of youth. Imagine practicing downward dog with two toddlers on your back! Most yoga moms experience an upgrade in their practice with children,” she added.
“You must practice amid chaos, seize opportunities when they arise, and adapt or risk abandoning your mat—these are, in my view, fundamental yogic principles. Flexibility extends beyond asanas and includes how we adapt our outlook and routines, which our children teach us,” she explained.
Discussing the challenges, she concluded: “Indeed, being a geriatric mom presents its hurdles. Yet, the blessings, lessons, and LOVE make it all worthwhile, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
