Los Angeles, Oct 23 (NationPress) The controversies surrounding Lizzo continue to escalate. In a recent development, the acclaimed singer-songwriter is facing a lawsuit for alleged copyright infringement.
The complaint pertains to an unreleased song. The ‘About Damn Time’ artist featured a segment of this track in a TikTok video over the summer, where she referenced Sydney Sweeney's contentious American Eagle advertisement, singing, “B, I got good jeans like I’m Sydney,” as reported by Female First UK.
Lizzo is being accused of incorporating elements from the 1970s soul track ‘Win or Lose (We Tried)’ by Sam Dees. This lawsuit was filed on October 21 by GRC Trust, a rights holder based in Georgia, with Jimmy Ginn identified as the publishing rights owner. Despite the track not being commercially released, the complainants assert that the 13-second preview shared on social media provides sufficient exposure for liability.
According to Female First UK, GRC Trust attempted to negotiate with the Juice singer but claims they “reached an impasse, necessitating the filing of this case.”
In response, representatives for Lizzo expressed surprise over the lawsuit, emphasizing, “To be clear, the song has never been commercially released or monetized, and no decisions have been made about any potential future commercial release.”
Meanwhile, Lizzo recently revealed her anxieties regarding streaming algorithms, fearing that her fans “don’t even know” about her new music releases.
Last month, the pop star released the mixtape My Face Hurts From Smiling, which features 13 tracks and collaborations with SZA and Doja Cat. However, Lizzo confessed to feeling concerned about the “shambles” of the music industry, as her recent work seems to be going unnoticed by her audience.
In a TikTok message, she stated, “The music industry is in complete shambles right now. You can use that to your advantage. Back in the day, the music industry was very algorithmic, but now, with the digital streaming age, there’s no control over the algorithm, and it’s stressing people the f*** out. I’m included; every major artist besides Beyonce has dropped music this year or plans to do so.”
