Los Angeles, Oct 3 (NationPress) The remarkable portrayal of Elvira by Michelle Pfeiffer in ‘Scarface’ stands as one of Hollywood's most memorable performances. However, her journey to landing the role was far from smooth.
In the film, her character ultimately enters into marriage with Al Pacino's Tony Montana, as reported by People magazine.
Michelle Pfeiffer, now 67, reflected on the film during a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast. Directed by Brian De Palma, the film saw a grueling six-month shoot, extending beyond the initial schedule.
She shared, “I never anticipated it would evolve into a cultural sensation.” In her role, she portrayed a character addicted to cocaine, which led her to lose weight rapidly, with the crew providing bagels in an attempt to help her.
For the climactic scene, her character had to be depicted as “strung out” and at her lowest, but its filming was continually delayed. Additionally, the set was largely dominated by “male” characters, apart from co-star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.
Pfeiffer described the environment as filled with “gangster guys and machismo,” with many staying in character throughout the shoot.
At just 23, she was coming off a lesser-known role in Grease 2. “I was terrified every night, feeling unworthy and lacking experience,” she admitted, expressing her insecurities.
Interestingly, Pacino, now 85, initially did not want her for the part. She recounted one of her “favorite stories” from the audition, which involved an unexpected twist. During her screen test, she described her performance as “good,” but as time went on, her anxiety grew, and she felt she was falling short.
During a pivotal restaurant scene, she accidentally cut Pacino on the finger, resulting in a bloody mess. “I thought, ‘Well, there goes that part’,” she reflected. Surprisingly, Pacino was unfazed and remarked, “I think she’s not bad.” This incident left Pfeiffer with a valuable lesson for her future performances.
